Our Association was set up in January 2004 by 14 wine-growers from the Mâcon region. Most of us have known each other for years, and all of us are aware of just how important the soil is in producing a high-quality wine that gets its character from the land it comes from.
The Mâconnais wine-growing area comprises a whole host of very different situations suitable for growing Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Gamay grape varieties. All of these may be used to produce wines under the same appellation but having quite specific characteristics, which we have decided to exploit and express faithfully and with sincerity.
We are all working in the same direction, towards the same end, and we all attribute the same paramount importance to certain aspects of our craft: growing the actual vines (including tilling all our plots); practices aimed at the greatest respect for the environment and preserving the diversity of the ecosystem; and maintaining hand-picking, out of respect for the grape and also for the symbolic and social value the grape-harvests have in our culture.
But none of this runs contrary to the many differences there are between our personalities, which are reflected in the way each person works and in their individual wines. We find this totally natural, and the small-scale nature of our activities allows us to be masters of all the stages in growing and wine-making, and so in a position to guarantee the results.
We are aware of how lucky we are, and we are proud to be able to work in this field; and also of our rôle as ‘curators’ of a unique heritage of landscapes, culture, and pleasure. We assume the responsibility for this in terms of both our contemporaries, and those who are destined to come after us.
Since the start, three new vineyards have joined our Association, which now has 17 estate members.
